The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), FCT Branch, marked the 2026 World Biomedical Laboratory Science Day with a high-impact medical outreach held at the Jiwa Town Hall, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), on 15th April 2026.
Under the leadership of Branch Chairman MLS Musa Wazani, the celebration moved beyond the laboratory walls and into the heart of the community, demonstrating the vital role Biomedical Scientists play in public health and diagnostic medicine.
The initiative aligned with the 2026 global theme set by the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS), “Biomedical Laboratory Scientists Promoting Sustainability in Clinical Diagnostics,” which emphasises the role of laboratory professionals in strengthening health systems and promoting sustainable diagnostic practice.
Licensed medical laboratory scientists provided free screening for residents, including tests for viral hepatitis, HIV, blood glucose levels and blood pressure. These were complemented by health education and professional counselling focused on early disease detection, prevention strategies and general wellness, with residents receiving expert advice based on their laboratory results — bridging the gap between diagnosis and treatment.
The Chairman noted that the selection of Jiwa Emirate was deliberate, reflecting a commitment to community engagement and collaboration with traditional institutions. The outreach also served to honour His Royal Highness Alhaji Dr. Idris Musa, the Emir of Jiwa and lifetime patron of the AMLSN FCT Branch, in recognition of his continued support for public health initiatives.
“Celebrating this day in Jiwa allows us to show the face behind the results,” the leadership noted. “We aren’t just in the labs; we are here for the people, ensuring that every Nigerian has access to accurate and timely diagnosis.”
The hall was filled with residents eager to take charge of their health, with hundreds of community members benefiting from the free services provided by a dedicated team of volunteers and branch officials. Residents expressed appreciation for the initiative and its impact in improving access to early diagnosis and awareness of preventive healthcare.
World Biomedical Laboratory Science Day, observed annually on 15th April, was established in 1996 by the IFBLS to recognise the critical contributions of biomedical laboratory scientists to healthcare delivery. The AMLSN FCT Branch reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining community-focused health interventions and expanding outreach to underserved populations across the FCT.
